An Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Person I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Land the Role That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my travel mate was considering starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had planned a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the student accommodation, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the canteen, where we grabbed food, sat down, and started talking to people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did for a living, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – close to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I ought to seek a job with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that after dark. The Iraqi student walked over to me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off told my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where anything feels possible – she said: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for three years. One of the benefits was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in multiple respects. I didn't possess the confidence or nerve to reach out at an Ivy League university and request employment. And, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

What's more, that job in New York led me to a role in Europe where I got to know my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
