Astronaut Reveals Depression In the Wake of Wave of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also included well-known figures.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the landing.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following achieving her goal, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose kindness helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the flight, such as increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated spacecraft launched from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the edge of outer space.

The team of pioneers also comprised accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
