Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a military coup in September and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. Lula was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
