No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's economic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
